Jammu, July 17

Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Friday reached Leh to review the situation in eastern Ladakh where tensions continue to rage despite the beginning of troop withdrawal by China and India for over a week now.

Singh will be visiting forward areas in eastern Ladakh where he will interact with troops to boost their morale and take feedback as they face inhospitable terrain and harsh weather conditions.

It is his first visit to the region since the standoff began at four critically sensitive places in eastern Ladakh, including Galwan Valley, Pangong Tso. The situation had deteriorated following a deadly clash in Galwan Valley on June 15. Twenty Indian soldiers, including a commanding officer, were killed in the clashes. The Chinese, however, didn't disclose the number of casualties suffered by their troops.

Earlier, the defence minister was scheduled to visit Ladakh on July 3, but he put off his visit as Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the area on the same day and conveyed a strong message to China.

Singh witnessed military exercises in Ladakh where troops exhibited their fighting skills to meet any eventuality.

Chinese troops have been conducting military drills ever since the stand-off began in early May this year.

This was the first engagement of Singh during his two-day visit to Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley. He shall be leaving for Srinagar on Friday afternoon—where he will stay overnight—to review the security situation along the LoC and the hinterland.
