Bhubaneswar, August 30
Several villages in coastal Odisha were inundated by flood waters of the Mahanadi on Sunday with over 10 lakh cusecs flowing through Mundali barrage near Cuttack, officials said.
As many as 17 people have died while over 14 lakh people in 20 districts were affected due to floods, the state government said.
Noting that an inflow of even 7 lakh cusecs (19,821,900 litres per second) at Mundali usually triggers flood in the Daya and the Bhargavi, the two tributaries of the Mahanadi, Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena said the flood waters have submerged many villages in Kanasa and Delang blocks in Puri district causing two breaches in the embankments of the Daya and another in the Rajua in Khurda district.
The breaches would be repaired immediately after the flood water recedes, he said. The swollen river also flooded villages in Banki area of Cuttack district and affected road communication.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is slated to visit the flood-affected areas and hold a meeting with senior officials about the situation on Monday, Chief Secretary AK Tripathy said.
In Lucknow, over 600 villages in 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh have been affected by floods, with the Sharda and the Saryu rivers flowing above the danger mark at some places in the state, a government official said on Sunday.
Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said of 690 villages, 299 are completely flooded.
In Maharashtra, heavy rains continued to pound parts of Nagpur, forcing the authorities concerned to evacuate 14,000 people. The administration had to call the National Disaster Response Force and the Army to rescue people at some places.
In Delhi, Yamuna is flowing close to warning mark, officials said. — Agencies
