Srinagar, August 7

Former Union minister Manoj Sinha (61) was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir today. Soon after taking the oath, he said his aim would be to usher in peace, end militancy, stay connected with people and ensure development.

He was administered the oath by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Justice Gita Mittal at a simple function at the Raj Bhawan here. Sinha, the first politician to take charge of Jamp;K, succeeded former IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu, who resigned on Wednesday evening.

The Lt Governor said the UT was India's crown and the abrogation of special status on August 5 last year was an important day in its history.

"August 5 is an important day in the history of Jamp;K. After years of isolation, Jammu and Kashmir joined the national mainstream," he told mediapersons after the oath ceremony.

Sinha said there was a need to instil confidence among the common people of Jamp;K in democracy.

"We will get in touch with people directly in coming days. Their genuine grievance will be heard and addressed," he said, adding "we will accelerate development".
