With five more deaths in Tarn Taran and Amritsar in the past 24 hours, the toll in the spurious liquor tragedy has mounted to 117. Three deaths were reported in Tarn Taran and two in Jandiala Guru, Amritsar.
Villagers claimed that those involved in the illicit liquor trade had gone underground. They blamed the police for failing to act against the bootleggers, some even alleging connivance. Jagjit Singh Walia, SP (D), Tarn Taran, said the culprits would not be spared. The Amritsar (Rural) police busted three illegal distilleries in Bhangwa, Chak Mishri Khan and Bhindi Saida villages and arrested 13 bootleggers. The Tarn Taran police booked 40 bootleggers and arrested 13 persons.
