Jammu, August 5
Girish Chandra Murmu on Wednesday evening resigned as Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, sources said.
There are reports that he might take over as Comptroller Auditor General of India, though official word on the developments is yet to be out.
Murmu, a 1985-batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, was appointed as the first L-G of Jammu and Kashmir last October after the formation of the new Union Territory under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
The two Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh came into existence on October 31 after the Narendra Modi government abrogated provisions of Article 370 that granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two UTs.
Sources said that Murmu resigned this evening after he was sounded that he might have to step into the shoes of CAG, or he may get some other comfortable and respectable position at the Centre.
"He has resigned, and he will be adjusted in some top position at the Centre. He has been sounded about it," a source said without revealing more details.
Former Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi may be the new Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, say sources.
