51.76% voter turnout in first phase of DDC poll

In the first electoral exercise in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, nearly 51.76 per cent turnout was recorded on Saturday in the maiden District Development Council (DDC) poll.

Jamp;K's Election Commissioner KK Sharma said the first round of polling in the eight-phased poll passed off peacefully, except for a minor incident of stone-pelting in Kulgam.

Out of the 3.62 lakh voters, 1.93 lakh were men and 1.79 lakh women, he added. Jammu registered 64.2 per cent turnout and Kashmir 40.6 per cent, Sharma said.

Reasi in Jammu recorded the highest polling with 74.6 per cent turnout, followed by Rajouri (70.5 per cent), Poonch (68.69 per cent) and Samba (68.61 per cent).

Similarly, Budgam in Kashmir saw the highest polling with 56.9 per cent turnout, followed by Kupwara (50.74 per cent), Ganderbal (48.60 per cent) and Shopian (42.5 per cent). Only 6.70 per cent voters turned up in Pulwama district.
