Two militants, including a local Lashkar-e-Toiba commander, were killed and a soldier was injured in a gunfight on the city outskirts today, police said.
The encounter started at Ranbirgarh, Panzinara, when joint teams of security forces were carrying out a cordon and search operation following inputs about militant presence. "As the presence of terrorists got ascertained, they were given the opportunity to surrender. However, they opened indiscriminate fire at the joint search team, which was retaliated to. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed," a police spokesman said.
A senior Jamp;K police officer identified one of the slain militants as Lashkar commander Ishfaq Rashid, a resident of Sozeith, Srinagar. "He was active since 2018 and wanted in many cases," the officer said. The other militant was identified as Aijaz Bhat, a resident of Kakapora, Pulwama. Bhat was active since June 2019.
Meanwhile, the Army today recovered arms, including a Soviet-era sniper rifle, in Baramulla's Gulmarg sector. — TNS
