Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today said India was ready to take the lead in capacity building and management in the tiger range countries, and was planning an ambitious water and fodder augmentation to augment habitats and reduce man-animal conflict.

"Despite having only 2.6 per cent of the world landmass, 4 per cent fresh rainwater resources, 16 per cent of human population and 16 per cent of cattle population, India has 8 per cent of the world's biodiversity. This is India's real strength and soft power. This is because of our ability to coexist and care for it.

"India has 70 per cent of the world's tiger population, it is our soft power," the Environment Minister said, speaking on the eve of World Tiger Day. He also released the "Status of Tigers, Co-predators and Prey in India report for 2018". According to the report, two reserves — Dampa in Mizoram and Buxa in West Bengal — don't have any tigers left.

"India has 50 tiger reserves. None of them are of poor quality," according to Javadekar. The tiger population increased from 2,226 in 2014 to 2,927 in 2018 following efforts that included better corridors between isolated pockets of tiger territory, reduced poaching and building up prey numbers through habitat restoration.
